Nile Lodge House

This impressive Historic House was built by Captain Hutchinson, of Nelson's fleet, on the shores of Galway Bay in 1807. He captained several of Nelsons ships and was appointed in the early 1800s to the ship The Victory, on which Nelson so famously died. Nile Lodge is one of the most prestigious private houses in the City of Galway and has a wonderful, rich history, which is clearly visible in the house, showing details from Nelsons times through the past 200 years. This beautiful house, which originally had a sea view, stands on over an acre of private, mature, beautifully landscaped gardens which provide a wonderful green oasis within minutes of the centre of Galway. There is a high-walled orchard to the rear of the property which is enjoyable for children and adults alike.

Front RoomThe house is a large villa-style residence, with an 'upstairs-downstairs' ambiance. Upstairs, the house is quite traditional in layout with a stunning entrance hall and bright, spacious rooms with large windows. The drawing room and dining room are on opposite sides of the hall and both have a wonderful formality and elegance, while still being comfortable and cosy. Both rooms are ideal for entertaining on a grand scale. The vaulted ceilings have beautiful plasterwork and marble fireplaces, exquisite hand cut chandeliers, beautiful Irish carpets and superior quality antique furniture all add to the grandeur of Nile Lodge. There is a luxurious living room at the end of the entrance hall which also has a high vaulted ceiling, magnificent antique furniture and large open fire making it perfect for relaxed, intimate conversation and family fun. The living room opens onto a period conservatory which, in turn, opens onto a furnished Italianate patio, the perfect place for summer evening barbecues, relaxing with a glass of wine.

Breakfast in the parlourNile Lodge is an ideal venue for small intimate weddings, private family celebrations, reunions and memorable holidays. It is perfectly located for all that the West of Ireland has to offer, especially its many superb golf courses, game and coarse fishing, or sailing and scuba diving off the coast.

The beautiful mountains and lakes of Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren are just a short drive away. There are frequent daily boat trips to the nearby spectacular Aran Islands.

Just received the review from the lovely people at Luxury Web Magazine who popped in for lunch recently. Why not take 5 & have a read:

We stopped for lunch at the historic Nile Lodge just minutes outside of Galway city. The house dates to 1805 when Commander William Hutchinson, who played a pivotal role in Admiral Nelson’s defeat of Napoleon’s fleet at the Battle of the Nile, built the house on his return home in a design suggestive of the bridge of a ship. Today the house is still original and filled with antiques and artifacts so that when you walk past the garden into the house, you feel as you are walking back into the early 19th century...
